A beagle on stilts with pack-hound priorities.
The Harrier looks like a medium hound for people who think a Beagle needed longer legs and fewer consequences. Precious. This is an old English pack hound bred for hare, stamina, voice, dog-social work, and following scent with the confidence of a creature that has never read a lease agreement.
Friendly is real. Easy is not. The hare hound needs sniff-heavy exercise, pack-style companionship, leash realism, secure containment, and owners who can handle baying without acting personally betrayed by history.

Other Names:
Colors: any hound color (tricolor, lemon/white, red/white, etc.)
Lifespan: 12 to 15 years
Size: Males – 19 to 21 in; 45 to 60 lbs; Females – 19 to 21 in; 45 to 60 lbs
Origin
In England, pack hounds were developed for hare hunting over distance, with this medium worker sitting between smaller rabbit hounds and larger foxhounds in size and stamina. The job was to run, trail, bay, and work with other dogs while humans tried to keep up.
Pack hunting shaped the whole personality: friendly, social, nose-led, vocal, prey-aware, and built for endurance. A medium body does not make the hound moderate in commitment, because scent has never respected sizing charts.
Now people see a cheerful face and imagine a practical Beagle upgrade. With active hound people, the hare hound is fun, social, and tireless. Without structure, it becomes loud, roaming-minded, distracted, and very committed to embarrassing the recall cue.
Personality
Open, friendly, and social, with a pack-hound temperament that often enjoys people and dogs. The warmth is real, but it arrives attached to prey drive, stamina, and a nose with veto power.
Independence is strongest when scent appears. It can be charming at home and wildly unavailable outdoors, which is not betrayal; it is the job description doing laps.
Compatibility with Kids
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Usually friendly with kids, but energy, voice, food interest, and hound enthusiasm need adult supervision. Homes expecting a plush Beagle reboot are about to meet endurance with ears.
Compatibility with Other Dogs
Rating: ★★★★☆
Often good with dogs thanks to pack heritage. Still, social hounds need manners, resource rules, and compatible playmates, because a group of loud idiots is still a group of idiots.

Compatibility with Small Animals
Rating: ★☆☆☆☆
Fragile prey animals are a hard sell without serious barriers. Rabbits, guinea pigs, and poultry line up too neatly with hare-hunting history for comfort, and pretending otherwise is peak human optimism.

Mental Engagement: ★★★★★
High mental engagement through scent work, tracking, puzzles, novelty, and problem solving. Obedience theater alone will bore it into finding louder hobbies.
Containment Concerns
Rating: ★★★★☆
Secure fencing, leashes, long lines, and wildlife management are mandatory. This hound can roam, bay, pull, and follow scent with a confidence humans would ruin if they had it.
Health Watch
These cheerful pack hounds can be hardy, but hips, ears, weight, feet, joints, scent-work injuries, and responsible hound-body maintenance still matter.
- Canine Hip Dysplasia – A developmental joint disease where the hip joint forms poorly, causing looseness, pain, lameness, and arthritis.
