Juvenile Hereditary Cataracts (JHC / HSF4-Related)

What It Is

Juvenile hereditary cataracts are inherited cataracts that develop early in life. In Boston Terriers, early-onset hereditary cataracts are associated with an HSF4 variant and can progress toward severe vision loss.

Also Called: juvenile cataracts; early-onset hereditary cataracts; JHC; HSF4-related cataracts

Abbreviation: JHC

Breeds Affected: Boston Terrier

Breed Risk Note: This page is used for the Boston Terrier early-onset HSF4-related cataract pattern. Other HSF4-associated breeds should only be added when the breed-specific evidence supports it.

The Idiot-Proof Explanation

This is not old-dog cloudy eye nonsense. This is the puppy or young dog version where the lens starts clouding way too early because the dog inherited the risk. Cute little face, inconvenient little gene problem.

What Causes It

A mutation in HSF4 has been associated with early-onset hereditary cataracts in Boston Terriers. The lens loses normal clarity early in life, and affected dogs may develop serious vision impairment.

What Owners Actually Need To Know

Owners need eye exams early, and breeders need genetic and ophthalmic screening. Waiting until the dog is bumping into furniture is not a strategy. It is just letting the eyeballs file a complaint first.
