Absolute MUST READ for anyone planning to get a Rottweiler
Reviewed in Canada on January 9, 2026
And I'd say, not just a Rottweiler, but any other working dog. I see so many people with this level of dogs who have no idea what they have stepped into - it breaks my heart. Because when things go south, as the author iterates again and again, the dog is going to pay for it, even though it is never the dog's fault.

The book is right on, no bs, written with love and compassion. This is the best book related to dogs and human responsibility I've ever read. This book needs to be mandatory for anyone planning to get a Rottweiler puppy. It sets all correct expectations and takes away common cop-outs like "things will just work out".

It doesn't just give you information - it's relatively easy to get novadays - but it gives you a mindset, a model, a feeling that you need to match in order to judge if you're a good fit for a Rottweiler. I am not a good fit, and that's ok. Rottweilers are not for everyone.

This book will help people who a good match to prepare and be better handlers and partners.

If you read it to the end, and you still go "Hell, yeah!" to the idea of getting a Rottweiler, you've got to do it, you're ready.

I'd give this book 10 stars if I could.

Great for all dog owners!
As someone who owns both a Pit Lab and a Boston terrier, I was skeptical about another dog breed guide, but Woof-A-Pedia really impressed me with its honest descriptions. The section on pit bulls finally gets it right, addressing both their incredible loyalty and the challenges of breed restrictions, while the Boston terrier profile nailed their goofy personality and exercise needs perfectly. I love how the book doesn't just focus on cute stuff but gets real about important things like exercise requirements, grooming needs, and potential health issues.

So fun and actually helpful!
This book is adorable and super informative! I was totally overwhelmed trying to figure out which dog breed would be the best fit for me, but Woof-A-Pedia made it fun and easy. It’s like having a doggie matchmaker! The breed profiles are detailed, the advice is spot-on, and the humor throughout kept me smiling. If you’re thinking about getting a dog, this is a must-read!

Love it!
Woof-A-Pedia is a great guide for anyone looking to find a dog that truly fits their lifestyle. A few years ago, I lost my beloved Corgi, which was heartbreaking. After some time, I decided to welcome a Golden Retriever into my life and he’s now three years old. Reading this book reminded me of why I fell in love with both breeds, it perfectly captures my Golden’s affectionate and energetic nature and the unique charm that made my Corgi so special. The “Lifestyle Matchmaker” section is especially helpful for those unsure about which breed suits them best. While I wish the images were a bit more polished, the content itself is engaging and insightful, making it a worthwhile read for any dog lover.

Got for my senior parents who want another dog
My senior parents have been mentioning wishing they had another dog lately. I'm all for them having protection and companionship, but I noticed some "discrepancies" between their lifestyle and the type of dog they had last time that really disheartened me. (They had a very active breed dog that essentially never got activity). They live in a rural area and really want protection. Both to know when people are on the property and also wildlife that could wreak havoc. And a lot of the dog's I hear them mention would not do well outside. Getting them this book is the next best thing I can do to helping them match their needs with a breed that won't be a bad fit. There are SO many breeds in here. So they can see the dog, the size, temperament, needs and what they are good at. I'm really hopeful this will result in a better match for them (and fido) this go-round!

A Good Breed of Book
An excellent book for dog lovers and people making important choices about getting one. We’ve had a series of great dogs, and several times have tried out new breeds. We’ve used books like this to help us make choices that fit our homes and lifestyles.

It is so sad to see people make choices for dogs that they can’t sustain- and then give their dogs away or worse. Books like these can help with bad fits and buyer’s remorse, and help prospective owners be more fair to the animals they select.

This is the best one of these books I’ve seen. One of the most extensive set of breed choices, along with very useful information about each of them. The information matched up well with our experience with particular breeds.

There were also great pictures to accompany the information. Very well done.

We are thinking about our next dog, and I will need to review the book one more time- with a different purpose in mind. A great resource to have in making this important decision!

Incredibly comprehensive guide to dogs.
This is an incredibly comprehensive guide to dogs - not only all the different breeds (plus their grooming needs, training/exercise needs, health issues, temperament, history, etc.) but also all things you’d need to know going into adopting a dog. I loved the pictures of the dogs attached to their profiles, and the beginning that goes into things people don’t necessarily think of (but definitely need to, like cost, how to find good breeders or where to adopt if you’d prefer a different route, and more) is super in-depth and well-researched. I’m a dog lover myself and I’ve had several dogs over the years, both from the time they’re a puppy to adopted older dogs. I honestly really could have used this guide earlier! It’s packed with necessary information but it’s not overwhelming - in fact, it’s incredibly easy to read and you don’t need to be a dog expert to understand it. The author says it right - “Choosing a dog is not like picking out a new piece of furniture. It’s about finding a companion whose personality vibes with yours.” I could not have said it better myself! The appendices are also very helpful to scan, though everything is covered in the rest of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars These authors love dogs.
This book is so much fun! I picked it up because there’s no time like the present to learn about who my next dog might be, and I like reading and learning about dogs. It has a vibe of a knowledgeable friend who will help you see the drawbacks of each breed (and most breeds do have something you might or might not consider a drawback) but also steer you toward a breed that maybe you haven’t heard of before who might be just right for you. Before we even get to the breed profiles, there are more than one hundred pages of important dog care and considerations that will be important no matter which breed you choose. One that I haven’t seen in books yet is dogs for special needs, and I’m glad that it’s becoming more widely known that dogs can help us out in all kinds of ways.

In the breeds section, I first looked at breeds I’d had before or were on my short list for the future: Pug, Boston Terrier, French Bulldogs. On the opposite end of the nose, Greyhound, Borzois, Scottish Deerhound. There were plenty of breeds I’d never heard of before but sounded interesting: American Hairless Terrier, Appenzeller Sennehund, Barbado da Terceira. Each breed listing contains the usual, an illustration, colors, size, and health problems. Not so usual were nicknames of the breed, like Pibble and Couch Hippo for American Pitbulll Terrier. The personality descriptions didn’t pull any punches, but were also written in ways that you wouldn’t forget, “Your Jack Russell isn’t neurotic, it’s just a bored genius stuck in a tiny body with nowhere to put its evil little brilliance.”

Obviously the biggest target audience is people wanting to adopt a dog, but also folks who enjoy browsing, perhaps smiling at the ways their beloved breeds are presented. This is a book you can read, study, and enjoy for years. The authors love dogs and are absolutely the kinds of people who should be writing such a book.
